For the past 15 years, both my work and the class that I teach at Palomar College have run in tandem, with each informing and responding to the other. Developing a curriculum based on the history of furniture has both sharpened my understanding of the craft and also given me a vocabulary to explore issues and ideas that are personally resonant. This presentation will trace that interaction, drawing comparisons across many centuries of furniture ideas. While I actively discourage imitation or reproduction, I find great value in stealing an idea, making it your own, and using it to create contemporary furniture that has vitality and historical depth.
